The S Files - Episode 69

The S Files Episode 69 was recorded on a glorious sunny day at the Coral Cove Bar on a special fundraising day for young boy called Sam who has a very rare strain of Leukemia, he is only 1 of 7 in the world with this strain. It was announced that the special fundraising golf day raised over $8000.

We did manage to record an episode while we waited for the golfers to get in and got stuck straight into the World Cup, a FIFA sanctioned event where countries from all over the world compete to win title of world champions. FIFA themselves have even entered a team that resembles Brazil in all aspects.  Whilst the games have been entertaining the event has a tarnished image up their with the organisers FIFA.

The NRL is not fairing much better in the administration stakes and it doesn't take long for Shabs & the Tinman to get their thoughts out in how David Smith is running the game.  Expect us to get into more issues over the next few weeks. We also give a quick glance at the 3rd Origin game.

The Boston 13's are doing well and we give a quick wrap, we will give a more detailed summary in a week or two. When the finals are about to start we will give the USARL competition a once over.

The Super Rugby season is expanding and we look at the pros & cons of Singapore being admitted as the 18th team.

We don't have any awards this week but it turns out the Shabs has a funny story from beach volleyball during the week that still gets the Tinman chuckling. And Johnnyjojoshabadoo is the one on the soda water

Another week with Johnnyjojoshabadoo & MD from Coral Cove Resort bar & Restaurant. With Johnnyjojo on the sodas I decided that it was time for a few Crownies as we settled in an another wet day in Bundaberg.

Word is that Zumba is the secret behind Johnnyjojo's healthy lifestyle.

The flood appeal is cranking up with plenty of great support coming in. Always a big thanks to Emma & the team at Legado for their support on the Bundaberg Sports Flood Appeal.

Once we settled in we delve into the shambles that is the Australian Cricket side & the selectors get a bit of stick again. Why not, they deserve it after such a shambolic performance by some of the players who showed why people are not happy with the team being selected.

Congratulations to the Queensland Bulls who are now the Ryobi One Day Cup Champions. We have a banter over the game and some of the highlights. Odds are though with Queensland winning now the Twenty20 & One Day competitions and in with a chance to make the Shield final that you may not see any queenslanders picked for a long time going by recent Australian Team selection policies.

Why does MD think Gannon owns a Delorean?

Sad news in the NRL with the passing of, Mosese Fotuaika, a promising young player for the West Tigers, condolences are passed on to the family, club and players.

The NRL does get a good covering with the announcement of the Broncos team for round one and we also have our own announcement with the news of an Offsite Insider, Martymackay, who will be giving us tips & insight through the season.

Nextweek we will also have the "Grey Fox" on the panel. As a former bookie, his tips will be worth lsitening too, so make sure you tune in every week to get some good tips for the Sundays races.

Rugby as always gets a mention when it is on an with the Reds winning, it was never a surprise.

The Awards always wrap it up

Marto (Named after Greg martin, a former Queensland Rugby player that loves to give the Reds stick right up until the point where he know they will win. Then he jumps back over the fence to show support.

It is given for poor commentary especially when they don;t support their home town, state or country. Rugby is in the headlights today.

Bryce (Named after the infamous Bryce Lawrence who knows how to ensure the team he supports or rather the team from his native country always wins.)

It is given to appalling referee decisions that are so biased it should be seen as cheating. That or for really poor decisions that a blind person would not make.

SSO Fail  The SSO Fail is for those moments when things go very wrong. It can be by accident or in some cases deliberate.

Pubcast Ep 13

Lucky 13th episode from the Coral Cove Resort. A tired MD backed up after a long working week & Johnnyjojoshabadoo was on the soda water to help with his recovery. This didn't stop us bringing to you our thoughts again on the week in sport.

We got straight into the cricket and the disgrace that is the doctored pitch India served up for the first pitch. With it looking like a 5th day pitch surely the ICC needs to set standards for pitches. The Aussie selectors get a bashing again as they just don;t seem to know how to pick the right side.

 MD gives his update on Liverpool FC and the disappointment that could be a blessing in disguise after they were knocked out of Europa. An update on the Brisbane Roar as well.

The NRL is cranking up with the Charity Shield between Souths & St George, did MD & Johnnyjojo get their tips right. A serve was handed out to ASADA & Sen Kate Lundy for the farce that was the so called Drug Scandal. Rugby is back on and we were seeing red after the Reds loss last week and the poor officiating that always taints rugby due to the lack of consistency.

 We always finish with the Awards with nominations in all three this week, the Marto, Bryce & SSO Fail. A fan suggestion for the finishing song is an Aussie classic that rocks.

Sporting Sport Opinions as always kicks off with who we are and what we are about, but this week MD & Johnnyjojoshabadoo are proud to say we are part o of the team behind the Bundaberg Sports Flood Appeal to help raise fund for some of the sporting associattions & floods heavily affected by the floods. Extra thanks to Emma McCarthy & Legado for all of their support.

We then obviously get straight into the big issues in sport while enjoying a few Corona's.

The Blade Runner Incident - Was it a burglar is is he just a grouch with a penchant for shooting things that go bump in the night. We take make a few puns at the expense of Oscar Pistorious as he now faces murder charges for killing his girlfriend.

The big issue of the week though has been the so called drug scandal in Australian Sport, is there fire behind the smoke or is this a political ploy? Is this the worst handled case with no real evidence?  We give our angle on the farcical handling by ASADA & the ACC.

Rugby is back on and with the Reds about to kick off we have a quick look at the Super Rugby.

One last serve is given to cricket, the bias selectors that just love leaving out players from champion side if they are Queenslanders, and we cannot miss a chance to sink the boot into Channel 9 again and the annoying Bill Lawry.

The game that is "Simply The Best", the NRL,  is not far off and a few updates are handed out.

A red card is issued tot he A-League for the "any age is OK" policy for officials to handle games. Try not to mention the Roar or Liverpool to MD though with poor performances of late.

Pubcast Episode 11

We were so tired we forgot to take our normal picture.

It has been a tough week for MD & Johnnyjojoshabadoo who have been working hard as Bundaberg moves into recovery mode, but we take the time we use for relaxing at the end of the week to bring you another installment from the Bar & Restaurant at Coral Cove International Golf Course with a few refreshing Becks.

We spend the opening part of the show to bring you the news that a Bundaberg Sports Flood Appeal is being launched to help some of the heavily affected sports associations & clubs. With the great behind the scenes help of YZ Marketing & the exceptional Emma McCarthy some great items will soon be available for auction and online donations will also be able to be made on what is looking like a great website. We also announce the date of the Fundraising Night which will be the 30th of march and looks set to be a great night with music entertainment from Carl Wockner and a sports celebrity or three. Stay tuned for details as they get released.

We don't forget about sport and the biggest issue facing Australia for a long time.....Drugs & Match Fixing.  It seems that the AFL is in a lot of trouble and the NRL will be very nervous. The A-League has also been tainted with match fixing but with details still emerging it is hard to deep into the issue. This is one topic that is sure to get mentioned over the next few months.

Cricket seems to be hanging around and doing a lot better at it then the West Indies batsmen. Unfortunately the Australian Selectors are doing a good job at getting discussed every week as they announce another strange Twenty20 side that is yet again ignoring the team that won the competition.

NRL & Rugby get a mention with both seasons almost upon us and the All-Stars game tonight.

As always we finish with the awards:

Marto - It seems that cricket & channel 9 like this one. A new contender from the commentary box gets it this week.

Bryce - With so much going on we have not watched a lot of sport so this week Bryce himself gets the retrospective nomination that he always deserved for that game Australia played against Ireland in 2011. Not sure which one then just ask Johnnyjojoshabadoo.

SSO - Whilst it was considered to give it to Beyonce for this fine performance at the NFL Superbowl

It instead went to Tom Elliott from 3AW for this ridiculous comment on twitter.

When I stated this to Tom:

 If Football is boring @TomElliott3AW then where is the World Cup for AFL?

This was the response

@What_Dya_Reckon actually they do have one - but Australia doesn't compete. The most recent final was between NZ and PNG I think...

Lets just say that a lot of people responded.

Weekend Wrap - The Big Wet

It has been an interesting few days for Sporting Sport Opinions and it will still be awhile before the full extent of what has transpired to fully be known and realised. On Friday when we were preparing for the weekly pubcast we had no idea of what really laid ahead. Although it was bucketing down and had been torrential all day, the only thoughts we had were for the great guests that laid ahead.

We were quite humbled to have former Carlton Premiership winner, Peter Bosustow, on our show who regaled us with some great stories from his playing days and an insight into AFL today. Also it cannot be missed are the views of Mark "Jacko" Jackson who is a very passionate Australian. The biggest surprise we had was the last minute notice that Warwick Capper would also be available for a quick chat. During the recording (great editing cut it out) was the call that I received from my wife asking him to immediately come home. Many passionate sports fans out there will understand the bravado that a few beers can give and it was a "She'll be right" response. We obviously got out of town safely and are now quite ok in our homes.

 As the weekend unfolded it was soon realised why my wife was insistent on our speedy return home. As many are aware Bundaberg is experiencing it's worst flood in history and the coastal parts of town were smashed with high winds & tornadoes. We are not able to do much out here but sit and watch on TV and social media the devastation occurring knowing that the best thing we could do was sit tight rather than be a hindrance in town like the rest of the sightseers. Bundaberg and many regional towns are going to be rebuilding their lives and livelihoods for a long time after this.

We will continue to bring you our pubcast every week but we also will be doing a lot for our community. In discussion with The Sideline Reporter we are going to organise a charity night to raise funds via an auction. Once we have full details of when & where this will occur more information will be available. Many sporting organisations have been hit hard by this flood and we will be seeing what we can do to help out those affected. Keep posted as we will be asking for lots of help.

Pubcast Ep 9 - AFL Legends Edition

We started out thinking we would only be talking about the NSW bias that always dominates Australian cricket and the mind boggling way that Steve Smith seems to always get picked for Australia.

From there we talked briefly about Liverpool FC and had a good discussion about the Hazard vs Ball Boy incident that has been the talk of the last few days.

Then the show hit new standards with a legendary guest in Carlton Premiership player, Peter Bosustow, who regaled us in great tales from his playing days and why the AFL game of today has lost a lot from it's glory days.  There is also a news coup thrown in that we are proud to have been given by Peter.

Peter was on the show thanks to the great staff at the Grand Hotel Bundaberg who gave us access to the stars of Comedy Under The Stars show that was on that night and is touring the country. Heading to Yeppoon next (if the rain allows) and then down to Melbourne for 10 shows. It is a show not to be missed if you can handle a good laugh.

While we did try and keep on our normal track and talk about the NRL, the Azarenko saga in the Tennis and of course the usual ending with the Awards, the show received an extension (apologies for the editing & recording of this bit) thanks to a great little interview with Mark "Jacko" Jackson & Warwick Capper. It is worth listening to just to hear Jacko's thoughts on where our country is going wrong. 

I really hope you enjoy this episode as mush as we did recording it. Apologies if any of the language offends but I will never censor someone just because of a little Language.

Pubcast Ep 8 - The Reef Edition

Sitting in the cool breeze with an ocean view MD & Johnnyjojoshabadoo jump straight in the Big Bash Final & the great win by the Brisbane Heat over the Perth Scorchers.

It is just a question whether any of the players get the nod for national selection. Obviously we couldn't miss the opportunity to also discuss the National side who are having some problems with the bat of late.

With Lance Armstong the biggest issue in sport at the moment we give our thoughts of the subject but in the end decide that we all need to just walk on from the matter.

Walking on can only mean that as usual Liverpool FC are discussed after an emphatic 5-0 win over Norwich and plenty of good signs coming from Anfield. It is another story for the Brisbane Roar though who are not doing so well. We also announce the winners of the LFC Fan packs.

It may be hot and summer but the NRL is kicking into gear with the All-Stars game not far off and we have a look over the teams and return serve to a certain Mason. A short condolence to the family of Jon Mannah as well who sadly lost his battle with cancer during the week. The Titans are on board with us and we mention a great piece that would look great in any poolroom that should raise quite a lot of money for Variety Queensland.

As always we finish off with the Awards and this week there are nominations for all three, Mart, Bryce & SSO Fail which managed to have a few contenders.

Pubcast Episode 7

Recording at Coral Cove Resort on a typical stinking hot summers day it was a relief to have some crispy cold Coronas on ice as we delved into the sporting week.

Howzat:  How are the Aussie B graders going in the One day match and do they all deserve to be there?   The Big Bash is getting towards the finals and the Heat are still in with a chance but maybe the bigger issues evolve around things that didn't affect results but still make for good conversation pieces as chucking and hitting wickets get a good run down.

Walk On:  No week can go by without MD talking about Liverpool and with a handy goal by Suarez there was always going to be something to talk about. As always an update on the Roar who have made a few signings through the week.

Simply the Best: His can only mean one thing, it may be summer but the NRL has made plenty of headlines during the off season but finally they are getting down to discuss new rule changes and the obstruction rule causes plenty of headaches.

Game in Union: Australian Rugby has announced a new CEO and does anyone actually now much about him? Will he be good for the game and hopefully we might see Australia coached by an Australian.

The Awards:  All three awards get a nomination this week but they might not all be what you think. See who gets the "The Marto" in commentary, named after the turncoat Rugby commentator Greg Martin. The year is almost over and it is time for the duo of MD & Johnnyjojoshaboo Sideline Reporter to see out the year in style. Nestled in a secret environment it was time to reflect on the year that has been give out a few awards and raise a few eyebrows.

The cricket gets a bash as recent events are discussed before talking all things football. Then it is time to discuss the highlights & lowlights of the year. The awards aren't forgotten either.

Pubcast Episode 3

Hey, grab a beer, knock the top off, sit down and join in on the conversation as MD & the Sideline Reporter discuss the sporting week at the Coral Cove Resort.

Also the Sideline reporter explains why he dressed up as Santa and went for a run on a Sunday morning. I am trying to find some photo evidence.

Howzat: The test is over and what an shambolic performance by Australia, but who is to blame. Is the new Test lineup the right way to go? Also the BBL has started and a quick review is made and a bit of a laugh is had as the new technology is discussed. Even a flasher gets a mention in this segment. And we are still plugging #givebenabowl & #givejoeago

I See Red:  The A-League is in trouble if the standard of refereeing stays the same and the match review officials keep making poor decisions after Broich was sent off for doing nothing and the Sydney FC player gets away with a stomping tackle to the back of a leg with no case to answer. Don't be surprised if MD gives his beloved Liverpool FC a mention as well after they qualified top of their group in the Europa League.

Game In Heaven:  Finally it is known what Folau is doing, but is he chasing money or seriously trying to challenge himself and set a great record of being the best multi-sport international? A chance isn't missed either to mention the All Blacks lost to England either.

Simply The Best:  That Bronco's Jersey, ground breaking, slightly different but we like it. Was it designed before the shoulder charge was banned?

Awards: 

Might be a few contenders for the Marto Award. If you watch the cricket you might understand why some or most of the commentators get a mention. Some unkind words about one in particular too.

The Bryce nomination was a unanimous decision and if the FFA keep getting themselves nominated it could be upgraded to the man at the top. The Muppet.

Also it has been decided that the poor form award will be known as the SSO Fail ward. MD self nominated here for failing to have any nominations but the challenge is out there.

Don't forget there is a challenge for South Sydney fans to turn up to the pubcast.

Weekend Wrap

After a bit of a hiatus, the wrap is back.  And there are some interesting things happening in the world of sport. As usual I will be having a dig at match officials and maybe a crack at a few commentators.

Reds vs Kaplan

Regardless of what whether or not the Red's were beaten by a better side, the Sharks, this was a game where the officials had too big an influence on the game.  To start with the Red's were missing Quade Cooper, who was suspended for one week because the guy carrying the ball fell as he was about to be tackled and was "hit high".  In the same week we saw Sam Kasiano of the Bulldogs in the NRL charged and then let off on a very similar incident. The red's decided not to challenge but maybe they knew that things weren't not going to go there way.  Their decision may have been influenced by the fact that SANZAR appointed a South African ref and sideline official for a game where the away side was from South Africa.  Surely in a game of this level a ref from New Zealand was needed. Also the Red's were dealt a cruel blow with an injury early to Lucas and then moved Genia to flyhalf where he was not his elusive and attacking best. Once the game got started it was clear the Red's were without a chance.  Blatant forward passes, and an offside play for an intercept were missed and although the Sharks were continually penalised and warned for repeated infringements in the ruck when defending their tryline, Kaplan only seemed to remember he had a yellow card in his pocket in the 79th minute. In the 2nd half there was the disallowed try that I am still scratching my head as to why it was not allowed. For me it is at a point with this referee that if I see he is officiating a game, I will not watch it.

Scott Chokes??

Will Adam Scott forever be remember in the same vain that Greg Norman is. A choker.  With four holes to go and a 4 shot lead the British Open was his to lose and with 4 consecutive birdies he did.  But golf is a game where you can go back to any shot over 4 days and maybe his bogey on the 18th in the first round that would have given him the course record was the key moment.  Either way he still played a great 4 days and this may make him more determined in the future and could be the catalyst he needs to win a lot of majors.


Magic Win 

Congratulations to the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic on winning the ANZ Championship and becoming the first New Zealand side to win the title.  Whilst I did not watch the game personally, I was getting constant updates on social media and understand it was a very exciting match. What is disappointing is the coverage in the media today. Any details on the game are well hidden on sports sites and the game of Netball deserves more.  While the media focuses on the bigger entities of football and is over-focused on the Olympics they are missing the opportunity to grab hold of and dominate a very large market. It was not until I wrote my first article on Netball and then saw how big the following is online and in social media that I realised the marketing potential. It is just a shame that the large media companies do not give the credit that is deserved in their write ups in the following days.

Only a short wrap but stay tuned for some interesting articles on NRL and a story or two on the Cane2Coral Fun Run which will be held on the 5th August and will be raising money for Cancer Council Queensland, Bundaberg Surf Life Saving, Ronald McDonald House and many local charities in the Bundaberg region. .

Cane 2 Coral

Last week saw the official announcement of the FSPH Cane 2 Coral for 2012 in Bundaberg.  On hand for the Launch were FSPH CEO Alan Cooper, Rugby League great, Shane Webke, who is the Race Ambassador, any many more dignitaries, sponsors and volunteers who will make this event a very successful one indeed.

This is no ordinary local fun run and it won't be long until this is one of the major events on the National calender. With major prize money of $2000 for first in both Men and Women's plus many prize categories for all walks in life as well as team prizes, it is no surprise hat the race is growing with popularity. In total there is over $9000 in prizes.

How many runs can you think of where you start on the banks of a river, meander through sugar cane fields famous for the rum of Bundaberg before finally heading straight towards the ocean on the shores of the Bargara Surf Club where the Great Barrier Reef is only a stones throw away.  For the serious competitor or someone who really wants a challenge the race is 15km, but for those who want to enjoy the scenery there is an 8km race.

So if you are looking for somewhere to go in August book yourself in early for accomodation and register for the run/walk on the 5 Aug 2012.

To date Cane 2 Coral has raised $112,250 for charity and this year will be looking to greatly increase that total.

I myself will not be competing but I have registered to volunteer for the event so I hope to see lots of people there and who knows you might make the covering article that features on Sporting Sport Opinions.
