The S Files: Episode 50

The Tinman & Shabs enjoyed a few beverages again at the Coral Cove Bar & Restaurant in this weeks edition of The S Files.  We were also joined by an international guest all the way from Roma - Guilio.

You know you are really enjoying what you do when you reach the 50th episode and totally forget to mention it.

Once all formalities were aside & we made sure we had hit record it was straight to the cricket. With the Big Bash final on after we finished all talk was about how great it is to see that as the Heat didn't make it at least there was no team from Sydney & Melbourne.

The Australian team has landed in South Africa in what will be a greater challenge than England posed & it may be a quick reality check. It will be interesting to see how the tour goes.

The Super Rugby season is not far off and with the Shabs having the pleasure of meeting Saia Fainga'a this could be a sign of big things to come for the Reds. With the trials starting it will be interesting to see who gets a start in the first game with news that Harris will be getting a run first up with Quade Cooper. Rocket Rod Davis is also back after an injury lay off & big things could be coming his way if he can stay fit.

The mid-cast song is a great cover of the Easybeat's 'Friday On My Mind' by the Rubens.

This gave us time to prepare for the NRL section. Things are heating up for the season but unfortunately yet again the NRL is having a shocker of an off season. With a young player at West Tigers having his contract torn up after a stupid decision to write something offensive during a school visit, we look at how there is no consistency from club to club in the NRL. Let's just say that if he was a high profile player or from Newcastle all he would of had to do was apologise.

On a positive note we progressed in our effort to help & promote the Boston 13's and the Tinman has proudly become a Gold Member & we will be sponsoring a player for the 2014 season. We are really looking forward to covering a great season.

There was a little talk about the NFL Superbowl before we talked about the real world game, Football.  We were joined by our Roma guest Guilio who gave great insight into what he has seen in just a couple of A-League games and we look forward to plenty more comments. The Roar are stuttering but still managing to win or draw games that most teams would not. They almost have one hand on the Premiership & will be hard to beat from here.

The Awards always wrap it up & ASADA yet again cops a blast. Tune in to hear who else features.

As always thanks for listening!!

Podcast Episode 37

It's Rugby League Grand Final Weekend and the Tinman & Shabadoo changed things up and recorded a Sunday morning episode. With a night final we stayed off the drink and bring to you a sober episode.

Before getting into the NRL we give a quick plug to one of our great supporters, Beach 365, where a recovery session is held on the first Sunday every month. Check out their site for more details - Beach 365.

It is the Grand Final that has the team which Channel 9 & the NRL invested all their money into, in hopes they would win. Manly were just there to make up the numbers and our prediction may have been for a Manly win but we hold by our statements that the coverage and officials will be very much bias towards the Roosters. Just how many other predictions did we get right.

The mid podcast song is a little gem from the Ramones that really sums up our thoughts on who wins the Grand Final.

The Wallabies had a win and with the recording taking place not long after the game finished our thoughts will be rather fresh and reliable. We hope so anyway.  Question is, will Marto ever give a fair commentary to the country he is actually from. We are tired of his constant bagging of Australia & only ever showing support once it is known they will win. He is one commentator that really needs to look at himself and decide if he is really up for the job.

The cricket season is warming up, the Champions League is almost over, The Ryobi Cup has started and Australia is about to take on India in a 7 game series.Australia have a good chance to get the number 1 ranking and may just have the squad to do it.

The Awards wrap up the session and we leave you with another dedication to so many people like Greg (Marto) Martin. A little ditty by Ugly Kid Joe.

Pubcast Episode 34

Shabadoo & the Tinman

The Tinman & Shabadoo we back in the mancave to record another podcast in what is being coined as a poolroomcast. The surrounding sporting memorabilia provided great inspiration as another tumultuous sporting week unravelled requiring our unique take.

The NRL was centre of the headlines and dominated the conversation from the start. Is Earl Sandor the tip of the iceberg and how many players out there are having sleepless nights. We also look at how the NRL is taking the use of drugs seriously, compared to the the lacklustre, slap them on the wrist, approach the AFL takes. Yet another league player is in the headlines for a selfie that would even make Kevin Rudd blush.

Rugby gets the Shabs fired up after the Wallabies were never given a chance by a referee so far in the back pocket of the All blacks side that they needed to extract him out of Richie Mccaw backside. Given poor officiating though the Wallabies were terrible and will never win a game until they learn that holding onto the ball and finding some passion for the game is required at the top level.

The half time break was provided by Wednesday 13 - Bad Things, a little song to fire up the F.U.N.Z. chant in everyone. For reference to the chant, check out this article,  The F.U.N.Z. Chant

Back from the break we get straight into the cricket and with the Ashes over and liquid urinated over the test pitch, it is no time to look at the Twenty/20 games & one dayers coming up. The Brisbane Heat are the champions in Australia but there was a void of players from the team in the Australian squad. So it was a little bit of a surprise that Australia won. Shane Warne may have gotten another serve in this sec? tion.

Before getting into the awards we give the weekly update on the Big Dogg team at Beach 365. Beside talking about how great Thursday nights are at Beach 365 we find time to talk up how well the team went this week. Maybe we need to get the members names on their singlets, Tinman, Shabadoo, F1 Adonis, Cheech, Sasquatch? Might need to find some more sponsorship dollars first though.

To close things out we finish with a Guns 'n' Roses classis - Mr Brownstone.

Pubcast Episode 11

We were so tired we forgot to take our normal picture.
It has been a tough week for MD & Johnnyjojoshabadoo who have been working hard as Bundaberg moves into recovery mode, but we take the time we use for relaxing at the end of the week to bring you another installment from the Bar & Restaurant at Coral Cove International Golf Course with a few refreshing Becks.

We spend the opening part of the show to bring you the news that a Bundaberg Sports Flood Appeal is being launched to help some of the heavily affected sports associations & clubs. With the great behind the scenes help of YZ Marketing & the exceptional Emma McCarthy some great items will soon be available for auction and online donations will also be able to be made on what is looking like a great website. We also announce the date of the Fundraising Night which will be the 30th of march and looks set to be a great night with music entertainment from Carl Wockner and a sports celebrity or three. Stay tuned for details as they get released.

We don't forget about sport and the biggest issue facing Australia for a long time.....Drugs & Match Fixing.  It seems that the AFL is in a lot of trouble and the NRL will be very nervous. The A-League has also been tainted with match fixing but with details still emerging it is hard to deep into the issue. This is one topic that is sure to get mentioned over the next few months.

Cricket seems to be hanging around and doing a lot better at it then the West Indies batsmen. Unfortunately the Australian Selectors are doing a good job at getting discussed every week as they announce another strange Twenty20 side that is yet again ignoring the team that won the competition.

NRL & Rugby get a mention with both seasons almost upon us and the All-Stars game tonight.

As always we finish with the awards:

Marto - It seems that cricket & channel 9 like this one. A new contender from the commentary box gets it this week.

Bryce - With so much going on we have not watched a lot of sport so this week Bryce himself gets the retrospective nomination that he always deserved for that game Australia played against Ireland in 2011. Not sure which one then just ask Johnnyjojoshabadoo.

SSO - Whilst it was considered to give it to Beyonce for this fine performance at the NFL Superbowl

It instead went to Tom Elliott from 3AW for this ridiculous comment on twitter.

When I stated this to Tom:

If Football is boring  then where is the World Cup for AFL?

This was the response

actually they do have one - but Australia doesn't compete. The most recent final was between NZ and PNG I think...

Lets just say that a lot of people responded.

Once again we thank you for listening and appreciate all the support at this time when we are doing our Bundaberg Sports Flood Appeal.

    Pubcast Episode 3

Hey, grab a beer, knock the top off, sit down and join in on the conversation as MD & the Sideline Reporter discuss the sporting week at the Coral Cove Resort.

Also the Sideline reporter explains why he dressed up as Santa and went for a run on a Sunday morning. I am trying to find some photo evidence.

Howzat: The test is over and what an shambolic performance by Australia, but who is to blame. Is the new Test lineup the right way to go? Also the BBL has started and a quick review is made and a bit of a laugh is had as the new technology is discussed. Even a flasher gets a mention in this segment. And we are still plugging #givebenabowl & #givejoeago

I See Red:  The A-League is in trouble if the standard of refereeing stays the same and the match review officials keep making poor decisions after Broich was sent off for doing nothing and the Sydney FC player gets away with a stomping tackle to the back of a leg with no case to answer. Don't be surprised if MD gives his beloved Liverpool FC a mention as well after they qualified top of their group in the Europa League.

Game In Heaven:  Finally it is known what Folau is doing, but is he chasing money or seriously trying to challenge himself and set a great record of being the best multi-sport international? A chance isn't missed either to mention the All Blacks lost to England either.

Simply The Best:  That Bronco's Jersey, ground breaking, slightly different but we like it. Was it designed before the shoulder charge was banned?

    Awards:

Might be a few contenders for the Marto Award. If you watch the cricket you might understand why some or most of the commentators get a mention. Some unkind words about one in particular too.

The Bryce nomination was a unanimous decision and if the FFA keep getting themselves nominated it could be upgraded to the man at the top. The Muppet.

Also it has been decided that the poor form award will be known as the SSO Fail ward. MD self nominated here for failing to have any nominations but the challenge is out there.

Don't forget there is a challenge for South Sydney fans to turn up to the pubcast.

    Pubcast Episode 2

We didn't stuff up too much last week and turned out for another recording of the Sporting Sport Opinions Pubcast from the bar at Coral Cove Resort.

In another pro-Australian & Queensland Episode we delved into a few issues that occurred over the last week while we enjoyed a few Summers in preparation for the start of summer.. We don't like being dull but the mention of the word brings to though only one thing - South Africa's batting. Ricky Ponting's retirement gets a mention as well as the selection decision for the 3rd test and who should of been there. #givebenabowl is a growing campaign.

Rugby is in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Is Quade Cooper a boxer or chasing money like Folau & is the IRB judiciary a farce to scared to deal harsh punishments after a meagre suspension to Andrew Hore. The Kiwi's start copping a bit of flack but it is all in good jest.

If you are a South Sydney supporter then this is worthy of a listen as we give the Falcon a mention as we announce an interesting challenge. Also a sneak peak for the Brisbane Heat fans in put out as a teaser.

Reports may have been circulating of Bundaberg's own "Pump Up The Volume" occurring on the coast but a visit from the boys in blue ensured that the pubcast is ok.

The Awards wrap things up as more candidates put their hand up for the Marto, Bryce & Poor Form award. Listener nominations are always welcome but need to be backed up with photo, video evidence or just a well written reason.

As always we thank you for listening and welcome your thoughts and comments.

    Weekend Wrap Is Back

It has been awhile since I did a weekend wrap, so for those who look forward to some of my insight in to what I thought of the weekend of sport here is a new instalment.

    Australia Wrap Up Series

Australia have humiliated the Indian cricket side and secured the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in the 3rd test.  Australia only need 7 sessions of cricket to win the test match by an innings and 39 runs and at no stage did India look like they were ever going to really make a contest of the match.

Warner was a deserved man of the match after what was a game breaking innings.  After being dismissed cheaply on day one India must have thought that Australia would crumble just the same.  India was right in that only they didn't count on the opening pair putting on 200 runs before the collapse began.  What is of concern for Austraia though is how often it loses quick wickets and it's middle order fails to capitalise on good partnerships.  I will reinforce my campaign for Haddin to be replaced after he failed yet again with the bat.  Whilst Australia is doing well it is the best time to bring in a new keeper.

As for India, they have a lot of problems to address and hopefully they will wait until this tour is over before they click on what the need to do.  First change I would be making is with the captain.  Dhoni is out of form with the bat, has no energy on the field and generally captains as if he doesn't care what happens.  His keeping is looking lethargic and sub standard and does not seem to have any notion of what it takes to motivate his team that is lacking on self belief and confidence.  But instead I can see India finding something wrong with something outside their team, complain about that and forget to fix what the real problem is.

A very happy Berisha after scoring his 10th goal and the winner
    Roar Escape Trick
Brisbane Roar showed again that they are the extra time specialists and won a with two goals in injury time.  All the talk though is of the actions which took place after the game and I will wait until I have seen clear footage of all events before making my judgement.  So far though what I am noticing is that all the attention and footage is being focused on Berisha with little attention being paid to every other player that was involved.  Obviously there is more to the story when a player carries on like this and it will be interesting to see how it all pans out.  My guess is that the Sydney media will focus more on the Roar players than on any of the Sydney players.

    Tomic Wins Kooyong Classic

Congratulations to Bernard Tomic on his first victory in senior tennis after defeating American, Mardy Fish, in 3 sets to take out the Kooyong Classic.  At only 19 Tomic has a long career ahead of him and is going into the Australian Open in good form.  But the media needs to realise that if Tomic wins the open it would be an upset in world tennis.  He has the potential and should progress well, but the media just needs to let him play and not add any more pressure to him with their typical expectation that they love heaping on every Australian who plays in the Australian Open.

    Cricket In Winter

It has surfaced in the media that Cricket Australia has discussed playing the Sheffield Shield in winter to help capitalise on the potential of the Big bash League.  Lets just hope that it is just all talk and no serious thought has come to it.  Yes the BBL is doing well but Cricket Australia needs to be careful how they manage this competition.  It is bad enough that they are already thinking of expanding a competition that hs only jsut begun.  Don't destroy the main game for the sake of money as well.  If the Shield is moved to winter, none of Australia's cricketers will be playing 4 day cricket on our main grounds.  How are our young cricketers ever goig to know how to bowl on these pitches if they never get to play on them in anything but a twenty/20 game.  It would make more sense to play the twenty/20 in winter and play those games on regional fields.  Let's hope that they wait a few seasons before starting to make dramatic changes.

On another note I would like to point out the stupidity of Cricket Australia and their scheduling of Test matches.  Firstly the Sydney Test was played from the 3rd of January, Tuesday, which meant that anyone who has to work did not get an opportunity to watch nay of this test.  And then with the 4th test in Adelaide will also start on a Tuesday and the Australia Day holiday being the only day that there will be any cricket that can e viewed by those that work.  I am not counting Sunday as due to recent history I cannot see India making this test go 5 days.  Does Cricket Australia realise that if you want a good crowd and good viewing numbers you need for the majority of people to being able to watch.

    Big Bash Is Under Way

This for me was the deciding moment of the game.

Well the Big Bash is under way.  Here I was all buzzing and excited especially after Brisbane Heat won the toss and decided to bat.  Walking out to the crease were two destructive batsmen including my favourite player, Matthew Hayden.  With Brett Lee firing in, the fireworks were set to explode.  But with a crack it all fizzled out to be a game that I honestly can say I tuned off to before it was over.  Once Lee forced McCullum off the field with a crack to the nose, the game did not live up to the hype it deserved.  With a pitch that offered more than it normally would to a bowling attack in twenty20 cricket, the Heat could never get going with the continual fall of wickets.

Once NSW started batting, just by listening to the commentators one could tell it was all over.  How quickly they forget the form of past and how quickly they jump back on the bandwagon of a player scoring runs again. Haddin batted well but not too much should be read in to the form of a player in a game where he didn't really face any quality bowling.  And this for me is where the Heat lost the game.  The inexperience of the young bowlers let them down and there was no real threat from any bowler in the team.  For the Heat to have any hope in this competition they have already found out that you cannot rely solely on a batting attack, especially when the batting attack does fire.  Twenty20 cricket is just as much about stopping runs and getting wickets as it is hitting big shots.

The Heat do have promise though as Hayden looked good on his return, McCullum may have been a match winner had he not been hit and Christian showed his worth.  I can see the Heat bouncing back with a big performance at the Gabba.

Also of note for this game was the very average crowd that turned up, when the SCG management were expecting 20,000, getting a crowd of 12,285 is somewhat worrying.  Sydney will keep telling you they are up there as a sporting capital so to only have this many turn out on a Friday night is another example this year that Sydney is by no means a sporting mecca.

    Big Bash is Coming

The Bag Bash is coming and I am not talking about the next WWE wrestling tour.  I am referring to the up coming KFC Twenty20 Big Bash League in Australia.

With cricket on the world news stage for all the wrong reasons it is time to put the game back on the spotlight for the right reasons so here are the squads and my thoughts as well.  (Squad lists courtesy of Foxsports.com.au)

    Adelaide Strikers
Aiden Blizzard, Cameron Borgas, Lee Carseldine, Tom Cooper, Adam Crosthwaite, Theo Doropoulos, Brendan Drew, Callum Ferguson, Daniel Harris, Michael Klinger (c), Nathan Lyon, Aaron O'Brien, Gary Putland, Kane Richardson. Overseas players: Kieron Pollard, Alfonso Thomas. Coach: Darren Berry

With Keiron Pollard there is some real firepower but I have a feeling South Australia will not do so well.  They ahve some fine talent in Ferguson & Klinger but I think their attack is light on. Strikers keeps reminding me of Soccer and the Brisbane Strikers.  Not the best name to come up with.

    Brisbane Heat
Ryan Broad, Nick Buchanan, Daniel Christian, Ben Cutting, Peter Forrest, Ryan Harris, Chris Hartley, Nathan Hauritz, Matthew Hayden, James Hopes (c), Chris Lynn, Michael Neser, Chris Swan. Overseas players: Brendon McCullum, Daniel Vettori. Coach: Darren Lehmann.

With Queensland undefeated in all forms of cricket this year they are my top to win the tournament.  The masterstroke for Brisbane will be the coach, Lehmann who is proving to be just a good a coach as he was a player.  Add to that the return of Hayden who can blast any team off the park you also have a team with the explosive Hopes who can bowl a team to victory as well.  But they are not to be outdone with the hard hitting McCullum and top class spin bowler Vettori.  Looking at the team there is a lot of talent and should blow most teams away.  And now in Queensland says "How about the heat?" You won't feel like hitting the with your sweaty fist.

    Hobart Hurricanes
Travis Birt, Mark Cosgrove, Xavier Doherty, Luke Feldman, Evan Gulbis, Ben Hilfenhaus, Michael Hogan, Phil Jaques, Matt Johnston, Jason Krejza, Nick Kruger, Ben Laughlin, Rhett Lockyear, Tim Paine (c), Ricky Ponting. Overseas players: Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Owais Shah. Coach: Ali de Winter.
    Melbourne Renegades
Ryan Carters, Aaron Finch, Shane Harwood, Aaron Heal, Jayde Herrick, Michael Hill, Brad Hodge, Glenn Maxwell, Andrew McDonald, Brenton McDonald (c), Dirk Nannes, Nathan Reardon, Will Sheridan, Shaun Tait. Overseas players: Abdul Razzaq, Shahid Afridi. Coach: Simon Helmot.

A team with Brad Hodge is always a threat and with Razzaq and Afridi could put on some very good performances but any team with a Pakistani cricketer in it knows that they do not know which player is turning up.  Definietely a team to avoid in a final.

    Melbourne Stars
George Bailey, James Faulkner, John Hastings, Jon Holland, David Hussey, Alex Keath, Clint McKay, James Pattinson, Rob Quiney, Peter Siddle, Chris Simpson, Adam Voges, Matthew Wade, Cameron White (c). Overseas players: Luke Wright. Coach: Greg Shipperd.  Late Mail - Shane Warne

This is the Melbourne team I think will perform better with the likes of Hussey, McKay, Siddle and White there is a lot of top line experience.  Will be interesting to see which Melbourne team gets the support.  With the late addition of Warne this will be the team Melbourne support and should be quite competitive.

    Perth Scorchers
Tom Beaton, Michael Beer, Mark Cameron, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Ben Edmondson, Michael Hussey, Simon Katich, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Marcus North (c), Luke Pomersbach, Nathan Rimmington, Luke Ronchi. Overseas players: Paul Collingwood, Herschelle Gibbs. Coach: Mickey Arthur.

Definitely a good team here and with Katich back in WA he will enjoy being as far away from Michael Clarke as he can.  A good mix of experience, talented youth and International experience.

    Sydney Sixers
Ed Cowan, Pat Cummins, Brad Haddin (c), Josh Hazlewood, Moises Henriques, Brett Lee, Nic Maddinson, Ian Moran, Peter Nevill, Steve O'Keefe, Ben Rohrer, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Dominic Thornely, Shane Watson. Overseas players: Michael Lumb. Coach: Trevor Bayliss.

And yet again another city with two teams for support.  Brett Lee still thinks he can do it at top level is a proven performer but they might be a little light on talent.  Haddin can hit big scores but at every level always seems to throw his wicket away with a catch to mid-on or mid-off. Shane Watson is a proven match winner but with a big summer he could be rested.

    Sydney Thunder
Sean Abbott, Tim Armstrong, Nic Bills, Doug Bollinger, Luke Butterworth, Scott Coyte, Tim Cruickshank, Matthew Day, Luke Doran, Ben Dunk, Jason Floros, Phillip Hughes, Usman Khawaja, Craig Philipson, Daniel Smith, David Warner (c). Overseas players: Fidel Edwards, Chris Gayle. Coach: Shane Duff.

Could this be the dominant Sydney team, with Chris Gayle some big scores could be on offer if he fires with Warner and Bollinger will be their main strike bowler, for me this is the pick of the Sydney teams.

Overall Twenty20 cricket is so hard to pick and I always prefer test cricket but it is entertaining and will be enjoyable to watch.  For me this is the first year that Australia has got the concept right.  Queensland to win their first title of the season.
